Let's perform some magic now!!!! Click on your DODGE TOOL and make sure you have your HAIRY Brush selected again

Pick Brush #19 again (or the same size brush you used earlier) and now make sure your RANGE is set to MIDTONES and your EXPOSURE is at about 31%

And begin lightly adding some "highlights" to the hair, working in the same direction as your hair would naturally go, depending on your hair style you are painting. I started with the Ponytail and you can see from the image below how I highlighted with the dodge tool, the direction the ponytail goes.

Here I added some highlights going the almost vertically where the ponytail comes from the back of the head, to give the hair some style and dimension

Here' I have started making the highlights come forward toward the bangs

And more of the top of the hair is highlighted, including the bangs

And finally the back part of the hair. Now dont forget!!!!!!! You have to also go down on your BACK HAIR LAYER and highlight that hair too ! Put your highlights on the tips and whispys of your hair too!

Now....lets choose the BURN TOOL

Make sure you choose MIDTONES and EXPOSURE set to about 58% ~ this can be varied suited to your own taste

Lightly go over your hair using your Pen tool (make sure your Brush Dymanics is set on PEN PRESSURE) and add some darker places throughout your hair. It's hard to see in the image below, but when you do it yourself you'll see the difference.

When you're happy with it, we'll do the final adjustments to the hair to make it really come to life.

This is an IMPORTANT STEP ~ HIDE your BACKGROUND COLOR LAYER AND YOUR IMAGE LAYER and go to IMAGE/MERGE VISIBLE with your two hair layers ~ that puts the two hair layers into one single layer so the following step we are going to do, will effect the entire hair and not the image or backgroud.

Working on the merged Hair layer ~~~~~~

Go to IMAGE / HUE/SATURATION

Choose COLORIZE ~ And Voilla ! You'll see some life start to come into the hair

You can also adjust the Hue, Saturation and Lightness Sliders to get some really different looks to the hair and color

Now we want to add some Brightness and Contrast to the hair, so go to IMAGE BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST

Adjust to your liking. I used a -3 on the Brightness and +17 on the Contrast ~ Don't overdo it though !

And finally ~ Your finished hair !

Now you can merge visible your Image Layer and your Hair Layer ~ and if you desire you can delete the colored background layer altogether, or fill it with a different color, or pattern etc.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and learned how to use your Wacom Tablet to utilize the wonderful Brush Dynamics of Photoshop Version 7

Another helpful hint, is to look at pictures of hair styles. I have picked up some of those Hair Style Magazines at the magazine stand, to get some ideas on different hair styles to paint. Sometimes looking at an image to get the basic idea is helpful.
